Professional History: Mwangi Githiru PhD doubles as the Director, ESG and Biodiversity and Social Monitoring at Wildlife Works, spearheading the formulation and implementation of ESG policies and management systems, whilst also leading teams assessing the environmental and social impacts of the company’s forest carbon initiatives (mostly REDD+ projects) in Africa and Asia. He is also an adjunct consultant at The Biodiversity Consultancy, UK. Prior to this, Dr. Mwangi worked for the Kenya Government in the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.
Principally trained in ecology, Mwangi mostly works at the intersection of science-policy-conservation-economics and has a wealth of experience working with Government and non-governmental sectors, as well as academia and the private sector. He completed his doctorate as a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University, before spending three years as a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is also a Watson International Scholar of the Environment Fellow (Brown University), and a Kinship Conservation Fellow.
Mwangi has authored numerous publications including book chapters, technical reports, scholarly and popular articles. He is dedicated to environmental conservation and helping rural communities improve livelihoods through alternative income-generating streams and harnessing ecosystem services.
